Let’s talk about what actually changed.

The evolution: from IP blocking to ML-powered detection

Simple automation couldn’t fake this.

2024-2026: The convergence. This is where everything came together. Modern anti-bot systems now combine:

  • TLS fingerprinting (detecting non-browser HTTP clients)
  • JavaScript environment analysis (catching headless browsers and automation frameworks)
  • Canvas and WebGL fingerprinting (identifying virtual machines and spoofed environments)
  • Behavioral biometrics (ML models trained on billions of real user sessions)
  • Proof-of-work challenges (making bot traffic economically unsustainable)
  • Session correlation (linking requests across IP changes via fingerprint continuity)
  • Real-time ML scoring (making block/allow decisions in under 2ms)

Any one of these would be hard. Together, they’re devastating to generic scraping approaches.

Why 2024-2026 saw massive anti-bot adoption

Three factors drove the explosion:

1. E-commerce arms race

Price scraping became an existential threat to retailers. When your competitors can see your pricing in real time and adjust instantly, you lose margin. Major retailers invested heavily in anti-bot protection, and the anti-bot vendors responded with increasingly sophisticated products.

2. Ticket scalping regulation

Governments worldwide cracked down on bot-driven ticket scalping. Ticketing platforms were legally compelled to implement serious anti-bot measures. Kasada and Akamai became standard on every major ticketing platform. This wasn’t optional anymore — it was regulatory compliance.

3. AI training data battles

The explosion of LLMs created massive demand for web data. Suddenly, every website was being scraped at unprecedented scale for AI training. Sites that never cared about bots before started deploying Cloudflare Bot Management and DataDome. The anti-bot market grew 3x between 2024 and 2026.

The result? The percentage of high-value websites protected by advanced anti-bot systems went from roughly 15% in 2023 to over 45% in 2026. Nearly half of the sites you’d actually want to scrape are now behind serious protection.

Why Bright Data hasn’t evolved

Why ScraperAPI and ZenRows haven’t evolved either

These companies haven’t evolved because evolution would require a completely different business model. Per-site custom analysis doesn’t scale the way proxy rotation does.
