The answer lies in the economics of anti-bot bypass — and understanding these economics will save you thousands of dollars. Because what you think you’re paying for and what you’re actually paying for are two very different things.

The cost structure of generic scraping services

Let’s break down what Bright Data, ScraperAPI, Oxylabs, and ZenRows actually spend money on:

1. Proxy infrastructure (their biggest cost)

Bright Data operates a network of 72 million residential IP addresses. Maintaining this network costs an enormous amount:

  • Bandwidth fees: Residential proxies require routing traffic through real devices. The bandwidth isn’t free — device owners get compensated through Bright Data’s various SDK and app partnerships.
  • Infrastructure: Data center proxies, ISP proxies, mobile proxies — each requires different infrastructure and different acquisition costs.
  • IP reputation management: Clean IPs get burned. They need constant replenishment. The churn rate on residential IPs is significant.

For Bright Data, proxy infrastructure is estimated to consume 40-50% of their revenue. It’s their core asset and their biggest expense.

2. Headless browser farms (expensive and ineffective)

To handle anti-bot sites, generic services run farms of headless Chrome instances. These are computationally expensive:

  • Each Chrome instance uses 200-500MB RAM and significant CPU
  • Running thousands of concurrent browsers requires massive server infrastructure
  • GPU rendering (needed to pass canvas fingerprinting) multiplies the hardware cost

And here’s the painful part: all this expense is wasted when the headless browser gets detected anyway. Akamai and DataDome fingerprint headless Chrome regardless of how much hardware you throw at it. You’re paying for servers that generate failed requests.

3. General overhead

Customer support for millions of requests. Dashboard infrastructure. Sales teams. Marketing (those inflated success rate numbers don’t advertise themselves). Compliance and legal. All spread across every request.

The fundamental math problem

Bright Data charges $25.10 per 1,000 requests. Of that:

  • ~$10-12 goes to proxy infrastructure
  • ~$5-7 goes to compute (headless browsers, servers)
  • ~$3-5 goes to overhead (support, sales, infrastructure)
  • ~$3-5 is margin

That leaves approximately $0 for per-site analysis. Zero. There is no budget in Bright Data’s cost structure for a human engineer to reverse-engineer the specific Akamai deployment on your target site. At their scale and price point, it’s economically impossible.

The same is true for ScraperAPI at their lower price points. And Oxylabs. And ZenRows. None of them can afford to do per-site custom work at scale. Their business model physically cannot accommodate it.

Why per-site analysis is expensive (and worth it)

Here’s what custom anti-bot analysis actually requires:

Reverse engineering labor

A skilled security researcher needs to:

  • Analyze the target site’s specific anti-bot deployment
  • Identify which sensors are active and how they’re configured
  • Map the challenge-response flow
  • Build a bypass strategy that passes all checks
  • Test across multiple IP ranges, geolocations, and browser configurations

This takes hours to days per site, depending on complexity. A senior security engineer’s time is not cheap.

Continuous maintenance

Anti-bot systems update constantly. Akamai pushes sensor updates weekly. DataDome’s ML models retrain on new bot patterns daily. A bypass that works today might fail tomorrow.

This means someone needs to monitor every custom-analyzed site, detect when bypass rates drop, and update the strategy. It’s ongoing work, not a one-time effort.

Specialized infrastructure

Passing advanced anti-bot checks requires more than headless Chrome farms:

  • Real browser instances with genuine GPU rendering
  • Custom browser extensions that mimic human behavior
  • Sophisticated session management per target site
  • Site-specific request orchestration

This infrastructure is more expensive per request than generic proxy routing. But it actually works, which changes the economics entirely.

  • Strength: Massive scale, broad coverage, good for easy-to-moderate sites
  • Weakness: Economically cannot invest in per-site analysis at scale
  • Model: High volume, low specialization, average across all difficulty levels
  • Where they win: Sites without advanced anti-bot protection (still a big market)

Specialist services (UltraWebScrapingAPI)

  • Strength: Deep expertise in anti-bot bypass, per-site custom analysis, highest success rates
  • Weakness: Not the cheapest option for sites that don’t need it
  • Model: Focused volume on hard targets, deep specialization, premium results
  • Where we win: Any site protected by Akamai, DataDome, PerimeterX, Kasada, or Imperva

This isn’t a criticism of generalist services. It’s an observation about economic reality. You don’t hire a brain surgeon to put on a bandage. And you don’t use a bandage for brain surgery.
