ScraperAPI and ZenRows both claim “anti-bot bypass.” Both fail on the hard sites.
Search for “web scraping API” and you’ll find ScraperAPI and ZenRows everywhere. Great SEO. Competitive pricing. Features that sound impressive on paper.
But paste an Akamai-protected URL into either service and watch what happens: nothing useful comes back.
We’re not saying ScraperAPI and ZenRows are bad products. For basic scraping — sites without serious anti-bot protection — they work fine. But their “anti-bot bypass” marketing is misleading when it comes to the protection systems that actually matter.
What ScraperAPI actually does (and doesn’t do)
ScraperAPI’s approach:
- Takes your URL
- Routes it through a proxy (datacenter or residential)
- Optionally renders JavaScript with headless Chrome
- Returns whatever comes back
What their “anti-bot” mode adds:
- Retry logic (send the same request again from a different IP)
- Header rotation (cycle through different User-Agent strings)
- Optional residential proxies
What it doesn’t do:
- Real browser fingerprinting
- Per-site analysis of anti-bot configurations
- Canvas/WebGL fingerprint management
- Behavioral simulation
- Session management across multi-page flows
On an Akamai-protected site, ScraperAPI’s “anti-bot” mode sends 5 retries from 5 different IPs. Akamai blocks all 5 because it’s looking at the browser fingerprint, not the IP. You get charged for 5 requests. You get zero data.
What ZenRows actually does (and doesn’t do)
ZenRows markets more aggressively on anti-bot capabilities than ScraperAPI:

ZenRows’ “AI-powered bypass” works on basic protection. On enterprise-grade anti-bot systems, their headless browser farms get detected just like everyone else’s.
The distinction between “bypasses Cloudflare” and “bypasses Akamai Bot Manager” is enormous. ZenRows blurs this distinction in their marketing.

Why ScraperAPI and ZenRows will never solve this
It’s not that ScraperAPI and ZenRows are lazy. It’s that their business model doesn’t support handling advanced anti-bot protection:
- Scale economics — They process millions of requests with automated infrastructure. Per-site reverse engineering doesn’t scale the same way.
- Pricing pressure — At $5-15/1K requests, they can’t afford the manual analysis needed for each anti-bot deployment.
- Generic approach — Their architecture is built around “one solution for all sites.” Advanced anti-bot protection requires per-site solutions.
This is exactly why we exist. We don’t try to be a cheap, generic scraping API. We specialize in the sites that generic services can’t handle.
The real question: what’s blocking your target site?
If your scraper is getting blocked, the first step is identifying which anti-bot system is responsible:
- “Access Denied” with Akamai headers → Akamai Bot Manager
- Cloudflare challenge page or invisible block → Cloudflare Turnstile
- DataDome CAPTCHA or instant 403 → DataDome
- HUMAN/px challenge → PerimeterX
- Proof-of-work challenge or cryptographic token → Kasada
If you see any of these, ScraperAPI and ZenRows won’t help. Neither will Bright Data or Oxylabs.
Our recommendation
For your scraping pipeline:
- Use ScraperAPI or ZenRows for unprotected sites — they’re affordable and work fine
- Use Bright Data when you need residential proxies for geo-targeted scraping
- Use UltraWebScrapingAPI for anti-bot protected sites that all of the above fail on
This isn’t an either/or decision. The smartest approach uses cheap services for easy URLs and sends only the failures to us.
