For normal websites — sites without advanced anti-bot protection — Bright Data is excellent. Use them. We mean it.
But here’s what Bright Data doesn’t want you to know: their Web Unlocker fails on the hardest anti-bot protected sites. And they charge you for every failed request.
The Bright Data failure pattern
If you’ve used Bright Data’s Web Unlocker on an Akamai or DataDome protected site, you’ve seen this:
Response: 403 Forbidden
Body: <html><head><title>Access Denied</title></head>...
Or worse:
Response: 200 OK
Body: <html><head></head><body></body></html>
A 200 status with empty HTML. You paid for the request. You got nothing back. And Bright Data’s dashboard shows it as a “successful” request because the status code was 200.
Why Bright Data fails on advanced anti-bot sites
Bright Data uses proxy rotation — the same fundamental approach as ScraperAPI, Oxylabs, ZenRows, and every other scraping service. The idea is simple: route requests through different IP addresses so the target site can’t block you by IP.
This works on most websites. It fails completely on sites protected by:
