But ScraperAPI’s marketing makes claims about anti-bot bypass that their technology simply cannot deliver on, and developers waste real money discovering this the hard way.

This review will tell you exactly what ScraperAPI can do, what it can’t, and when you need to look elsewhere.

ScraperAPI: What You Get

The Product

ScraperAPI is a proxy-based scraping API. You send a URL, they route your request through their proxy pool with automatic retries and IP rotation, and return the HTML. They also offer:

  • Geo-targeting — route requests through specific countries

On the surface, this looks like excellent value. $0.10 per 1,000 credits on the Business plan is dirt cheap. But there’s a critical detail buried in the pricing: JavaScript rendering requests cost 10 credits each, and anti-bot bypass attempts cost 10-25 credits each.

So that $0.10 per 1,000 credits becomes $1.00-$2.50 per 1,000 requests when you enable the features you actually need for protected sites. And when those requests fail — which they will on anti-bot sites — you’ve still burned the credits.

What ScraperAPI Does Well

Simplicity. The API is dead simple. One endpoint, one parameter for the URL, optional parameters for rendering and geo-targeting. A developer with zero scraping experience can be up and running in 5 minutes. This is genuinely ScraperAPI’s strongest selling point.

Documentation. Their docs are clean, well-organized, and include examples in every major language. For beginners, the onboarding experience is smooth.

Basic Scraping at Scale. For unprotected sites — think blogs, news sites, small e-commerce, forums — ScraperAPI handles high volumes reliably and cheaply. If your workload is 90% basic sites, the Business plan at $299/month is genuinely good value.

Auto-Parsing. Their structured data extraction for Amazon and Google is reasonably accurate and saves you from writing parsing logic. If those are your primary targets, it’s a useful feature.

Customer Support. ScraperAPI’s support team is responsive and helpful for standard use cases. They’ll help you optimize your requests and troubleshoot basic issues quickly.

ScraperAPI’s Anti-Bot Claims vs Reality

Here’s where things get ugly.

ScraperAPI markets a “premium proxy” feature and claims to handle “anti-bot protections.” Their marketing pages feature logos of Cloudflare, PerimeterX, and other anti-bot vendors, implying compatibility. Let’s test those claims.

Test Methodology

We tested ScraperAPI’s premium proxy feature (with JavaScript rendering enabled) against 40 sites protected by major anti-bot systems. Each test consisted of 5,000 requests spread over 48 hours to account for any variability. All requests used ScraperAPI’s recommended settings for anti-bot bypass.
